Architectural Lighting of the Altana at Palazzo Altemps, Rome

On July 2, 2025, the restoration of the Altana at Palazzo Altemps was officially inaugurated—one of the most evocative spaces of the late Roman Renaissance.
Located at the southeast corner of the building, the altana—originally designed in the late 16th century by Martino Longhi the Elder and completed by his son Onorio—is distinguished by its elegant architecture and painted decorations, including the ibex, heraldic symbol of the Altemps family.

At the invitation of the National Roman Museum, we designed the architectural lighting for the Altana at Palazzo Altemps.
The challenge was twofold: to create a scenographic effect visible from the street, while also ensuring functional lighting for evening cultural and musical events.

To meet this goal, we used:

  • Castello floodlight for ambient lighting,
  • Duomo floodlight to focus light on the performance area reserved for musicians and speakers.

Both types were equipped with anti-glare rings to ensure visual clarity, color rendering, and comfort.

The light, carefully calibrated to the architectural context, enhances the depth and lightness of the altana’s volumes, making it stand out like a “celestial lantern” visible even to passersby on the street below.
